Constitutes the thirteenth part of Theodor de Bry's Small voyages, printed in 13 parts and an Appendix in Frankfurt am Main and Oppenheim from 1597 to 1633
This work has been identified as the sole German edition of part thirteen of the Small voyages by Church. There is no Latin edition of part thirteen
Part XII. of the Small voyages was published by Wilhelm Fitzer, a son-in-law of Johann Theodor de Bry. The three sections of which it is composed had been previously published in German, forming parts XII. and XIII. of the Small voyages, in which they had been divided into fifty-one distinct chapters. Fitzer in publishing this volume, which contains the results of new voyages undertaken by the English and Dutch in Oriental countries, had a desire to bring the collection published by his family down to date. The greater part of these voyages had already been published by Purchas in his collection. Tiele (p. 198-202) gives the titles of some of the chapters which had been published separately in Dutch; and Camus (p. 272-273) gives the contents of both the English and Dutch voyages. Cf. Church
There is a table of contents on p. [4], 1st count. This volume contains voyages by Henry Hudson and William Baffin and their search for the Northwest Passage in 1607 and 1616 respectively, James Hall's journey to Greenland in 1612, and other voyages to Iceland and Greenland
Signatures: (?)² ((?)1 verso blank) a-z⁴
Errors in paging: p. 16, 56, 74, 80, 88, and 110 misnumbered 8, 42, 72, 44, 82, and 112 respectively
Fully engraved and illustrated title page; engraved head and tail pieces; initials
Contains 4 leaves of plates, which are two double plates, a map of Tartaria bound between p. [4], and p. 1, 1st and 2nd counts, and the illustration of Amacao bound between p. 54 and 55, and 10 engraved illustrations in text
